HOW LARGE IS THE PROBLEM?
There are estimated to be 8 million slip-fall accidents per year, of which over 540,000 require hospital care. Slip-fall accidents account for over 20,000 fatalities per year, making slip-falls, the second leading cause of accidental death after automobile accidents. 40% of all paid workers’ compensation claims are slip-fall related. This translates to 104 million lost workdays per year.
WHAT IS REQUIRED TO MAKE YOUR FLOORS SAFE?
The Americans with Disabilities Act, the guideline for floor safety, states that a horizontal surface is considered safe, if the SCOF is 0.6 or higher. If there is a slip-fall accident and the floor is tested and the result is less than 0.6, it is possible that those responsible for the maintenance of the floor, could be held negligent.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF
If you periodically, test and record the SCOF of the floor with a slip meter and it is 0.6 or above, it will indicate that your floors are safe to walk on and that you have been diligent in maintaining safe floor conditions. If the test reveals a SCOF of less than 0.6, then a professional anti-slip floor service company, such as NevaSlip*, can be hired to treat your floors and raise the SCOF to a safe level. If you don’t have a slip meter, how will you know if your floors are safe?

WARNING
The smallest and the cheapest slip meter isn’t necessarily the best. The type of slip meter you purchase, is a very serious decision. The data generated and how it was generated, will be important in helping you maintain safe walkways and protect yourself should there be any litigation. A simple, cheap gauge with a string, might not be the solution. You will probably only purchase one slip meter. Make sure it’s the right one. One whose results, are admissible in a court of law.
